Empower yourself as an artist and educator

The M.A. in Studio Practice for Art Educators (Hybrid) at Teachers College allows art educators to deepen and expand their own art practice, and develop their professional practice in creating and exhibiting art. This unique program combines asynchronous and synchronous online coursework with studio work. Whereas a traditional M.F.A. program focuses solely on an individual artist’s development, this program offers students a chance to spend time both making artwork and reflecting on the artistic process and outcomes.

Teachers College has a history of providing excellence in online education. In 1997, Teachers College founded the Distance Learning Project (DLP) and by 2000, had 40 courses online.

Get the best of both worlds with our flexible hybrid learning format. Complete your coursework online during the academic year, and take part in intensive studio residencies in New York City during the summer.

The summer residencies are a core feature of the program, therefore all students must be permanent residents or citizens of the United States. International students are encouraged to explore alternative programs that align with their academic goals.

Join a supportive artistic community

The M.A. in Studio Practice for Art Educators (Hybrid) Summer Residencies give students the time to devote to their art while working in a friendly artistic community. With a maximum of 33 students in any cohort, students receive individualized instruction and feedback from faculty and peers.

This program is ideal for experienced art educators working in settings including schools, museums, and community art centers. While the program does not provide a direct path to teaching certification, graduates who already hold NYS initial certification and who meet other requirements for professional certification may use this master's degree to apply for professional certification on their own. Out-of-state applicants should check with their Department of Education.
